You can choose to be not be in a clan, but you'll be missing out in a lot of benefits.

Claiming

Currently, you cannot claim without being a part of a clan. Create a clan of just yourself if you don't want to play with other people to claim land.

Enabling PVP

• /hostile

When starting the game, you are peaceful by default. When running this command, you will see a confirmation message asking you to run the command again. Doing so will enable PVP for yourself, but you cannot harm other peaceful players or peaceful clans.
